The level of violence against women in various parts of the world is summarized by WIN Research in 2019. The country that reaches the highest level of violence is Chile (44%) representing the South American region and the lowest is Pakistan (2%) representing the Asia Pacific region.
Referring to the WIN Research 2019 data, 84% of the total world population did not experience violence and 14% experienced violence. Compared to 2018, 83% did not experience and 15% experienced. This rate of violence decreases in 2019.
Meanwhile, the total world population of women who experienced violence as much as 16% and did not experience violence as much as 82% in 2019. This condition is stagnant when compared with 2018, with 16% experiencing and 81% not experiencing.
The regions that experienced the most violence against women
The regions that experienced the most violence against women were America (30%), Africa (27%), and the Middle East (20%). Unlike the Asia Pacific region which is only (8%) and Europe (12%). That is, the American region which consists of several developed countries are still in trouble with violence against women. In contrast to the Asia Pacific region which is still largely dependent on patriarchal culture, in this case the data should show the opposite fact.
The age of women who experience the most violence is 18-24 years, while the age of non-violence is 65 years and above.
In terms of education level, around 20% of female respondents chose not to answer their education level, but this group experienced the most violence. However, this violence also occurred at the level of Masters (S2) and S3 (19%), Universities (16%), Secondary and Uneducated Schools (15%), and Elementary Schools (12%).
While from the type of work, around 21% of female respondents who did not work and who did not answer (15%) were vulnerable to violence. It is different with 8% of female respondents who retire or have a disability who do not experience violence. However, those who work like students experience violence by 19%, followed by full and part-time workers (17%) and housewives (10%).
Sexual Harassment
Of the total female population worldwide, the highest rate of sexual harassment was achieved by Peru (32%) representing the American and South American regions, followed by Mexico (26%). While in the European region are Sweden (13%), Greece (11%), and Ireland (11%). In the African region, namely South Africa (18%), the Middle East region namely Iran (5%) and the Asia Pacific region namely Malaysia (15%).
Sexual harassment should not recognize age and occupation. But WIN Research 2019 summarizes data on age, occupation, and education. Sexual harassment is highest in women aged 18-24 years. In terms of education level, the level of Masters (S2) and S3 actually reached 12%. In terms of the type of work, as many as 16% of students experienced sexual harassment, followed by respondents not working (11%), full-time and part-time workers (10%).
If concluded, the data can be said to be the main source of wealth for women when looking at gender equality. However, not all data is processed accurately if countries that have the highest gender equality rates in various fields do not show the actual field reality.
For example in Indonesia, there are still issues of protection of victims of sexual harassment, mechanisms for reporting victims of rape in the police, security of women factory workers, equality of wages of female and male journalists, even sexual harassment in educational institutions. That way, WIN Research’s data should be a reflection for us all.
